More of a light-hearted post tonight. But first a Book 3 update.
I’m down to 2 chapters left to write for the book. 2 chapters! I’m sure you can feel the excitement crackling in the air. 🙂
The current chapter I’m tackling was one I formerly abandoned due to character difficulties. I’ve realized I just don’t know enough about a couple of newer characters, so before diving back into writing, I’m going to fill out some character questionnaires with questions like: “Your character’s in a crisis! Who’s the first person they turn to?”, “What do they love most about themselves?” and “When do they doubt themselves? What makes them do so?”
As you can see, these aren’t fluff questions. They get right down to the heart of who a character is. Hopefully, answering them will get me unstuck.
Now on to the random trivial thing that inspired this blog post: today’s mail. 😉
A few years ago, before I published my first book, I started a business called Knights Press. It isn’t really a business in the usual sense of the word; it’s really just an entity that exists for tax purposes. Still, it officially exists as a company and as such I get a certain amount of junk mail associated with it.
Along with the usual credit card offers, I also regularly receive a Uline catalogue. (And on a random tangent, I’ve just discovered courtesy of spellcheck that you can spell that last word as catalog or catalogue. Never knew that…) Uline—as far as I can tell—is a specialized form of Amazon that will sell you anything having to do with business/office supplies. Just flipping through the 787 page catalogue I find:
Stretch wrap machines (Now those look cool.)
Duct tape in a variety of colors (Pink, anyone? ;))
Trash liners (I could use those. I burn through a lot of paper…)
WD-40
Medical gloves
Steel strapping tools (No idea. Maybe they’re for tearing your book to shreds when you’re upset about your writing…?)
Jumbo Sponges
Wire Shelving
Special Handling Labels (I like the fun ones like “Live Animals” and “Refrigerate Upon Arrival”. Can’t you picture the fun you could have with those?)
And of course there’s every kind of box, mailer, envelope, bag, etc. that you could want.
The thing that amuses me most, though? The address on the catalogue:
Manager Shipping Dept
Knights Press LLC
Gosh, a shipping department! Didn’t know I had one. 😉 Seems appropriate, though. I am obsessed with organizing…
