Alright, hopping back on board here. Sorry for not posting an update for Apr 9th, folks, (or 10th, I suppose.) No worries, though. Here’s a report on everything that’s been going on writing-wise.
Perhaps you remember my ambitious frame of mind in Monday’s post? I was *ahem* optimistic in theorizing that if you spend a lot of time thinking about a chapter, it should be fairly easy to write.
Well, there are theories and then there’s reality. In this case, the goal for Monday night was to write 1,000 words. The actual result?
A fine illustration of another comment of mine from Monday’s post. (“There’s a huge difference between thinking about a scene and bringing it to life on paper.”)
Tuesday, fortunately, was better at a production of roughly 232 words. That’s not great or even good, but it’s better.
As to why things are progressing so slow, mainly it’s due to an issue with character motivation. I’ve been wrestling with the problem of why Mark would keep going forward when I’m throwing a load of obstacles in his path. I also realized that I was starting to contradict some things I’d written earlier and that I need to take care to keep things straight.
On the plus side, while working out a solution to all this, I had a moment where I realized that this section I’m working on could be a golden opportunity. Not only can I hearken back to Book 1 theme-wise, but the scene can also serve as foreshadowing for Book 4. (And while that might sound dry to you, this is like the writer equivalent of stumbling upon a bowl of candy.)
Tonight’s goal – Produce 500 words. Not sure I’ll achieve it (it’s already past 12:30AM), but I’ll try.
