First off, the publication date for Battle for the Throne changed from this autumn to early 2018. This book is the largest, most ambitious project I’ve undertaken so far and simply demands more time to finish. It’s a humbling thing to have to tell you this. However, I realize it’s better to hold off and give you the best book I possibly can, then to run myself into the ground and end this project in a state of misery and frustration. (This lesson was learned the hard way from publishing Winds of War.)
That said, I’m planning to post weekly updates about Book 3, so that you know exactly how things are progressing. Right now, I’m beginning my rebuild of the book (the second draft some would call it.) This involves going back to the very start of the book and rewriting the chapters in order. (Or at least focusing on writing a single plot train in order. The problem with jumping around is that it’s very easy to lose a sense of the flow of things and what you have and haven’t written.)
I’m not rewriting everything. Just what needs strengthening. But it is still a lot of work. It’s easier, however, in the sense that while I haven’t finished a whole first draft, I’ve gained enough knowledge of the book to know what needs improving. (And since I don’t plan out my books start to finish like some writers, I really often just need to write nearly to the end before I can go back and say, “Okay, based on the big picture I now have, this needs fixing.”)
So, that’s where things stand.
